The Day After a Miss

A short guide to building one habit that lasts, with a plan for the days it doesn’t happen.

Most habit advice is about the start. This book cares just as much about the day after you miss, because that’s where many good attempts end.

The twelve-week record from the companion worksheet The cover of The Day After a Miss by Lea Morrow

Sound familiar?

Maybe you bought a planner or downloaded an app and started on Monday with real hope. Maybe it went well for a week or two. Then one evening it just didn’t happen, and then it didn’t happen again.

I don’t think you’re lazy, and I don’t think you’re broken. I think you were handed a plan built for a different kind of person, one who never gets tired, never gets sick, and never has a week that falls apart.

Lea Morrow, from the opening letter

How the book works

One habit, built slowly

Each part of the book adds one piece. Together they make a habit that can survive a bad week.

  1. 1

    One small thing

Small enough to repeat on an ordinary day, including a tired one, with a minimum version that still counts on a bad day.

    Chapter 3
  2. 2

    Tied to a moment

One sentence gives your habit an address: After I…, I will… Of everything in the book, it has the strongest evidence behind it.

    Chapter 4
  3. 3

    Made easy

Fewer steps between your moment and your habit, and a small speed bump for whatever usually wins instead.

    Chapter 5
  4. 4

    Counted kindly

You count every day you did it, not a streak. A missed day takes nothing away, and the next tick adds one.

    Chapter 6
  5. 5

    Picked back up

Grace days, a comeback mark, and kind words written in advance, for the day after a miss.

    Chapter 7

Try it

A streak forgets. Your page doesn’t.

These are Maya’s first two weeks of reading, from Chapter 7. Tap any day to change its mark and watch both counts.

  • Did it. Minimum days count.
  • Grace day. A miss you circle afterward, up to two a week.
  • Came back. The first day after a miss.

The research

Built on research, kept out of your way

The studies behind each chapter are in the notes at the back, with links, whenever you want to check a claim.

No 21-day myth

That number came from a 1960 book by a plastic surgeon, about getting used to a new face. When habits were measured, simple daily ones took around two months.

No willpower lectures

You won’t find words like “discipline” or “no excuses” in these pages. A slip is treated as information, not as a verdict.

Honest about the gaps

Where a popular idea has never been tested, the notes say so, chapter by chapter.

From the author

Small things first

For a long time, I didn’t really believe in myself. I never thought I’d achieve what I have today. But somehow, I did, and I barely noticed it happening. My habits changed slowly, starting with the smallest things and growing into bigger ones.

One of the first was putting on my running shoes without thinking about the run yet. The run came once the shoes were on. Small things like that are how I ended up getting up at 5 AM to run. I didn’t start there, and this book won’t ask you to.

Questions

Before you buy

What exactly do I get?

The book is a 45-page PDF that reads comfortably on a phone, tablet, e-reader, or computer. The book + worksheet adds the seven-page companion worksheet as a fillable PDF, in US Letter and A4.

How do I get it after I pay?

Right after checkout you’re taken to your download page. Save the files to your phone or computer. If you ever lose them, email hello@architectofdays.com and we’ll send them again.

I’ve started and stopped many times. Is this for me?

That’s who it’s written for. It starts from the day your last attempt stopped, and it plans for the days the habit doesn’t happen, because those days come for everyone.

How long does it take to read?

Under an hour from start to finish. It’s meant to be read one short chapter at a time, and each chapter ends with a small step you can take that day.

Do I need the worksheet?

No. A notebook works just as well. The worksheet gives every small step its own space, and a twelve-week record you can print again for each new round.

I bought the book alone. Can I add the worksheet later?

Yes. The worksheet is sold on its own for $9. You’ll find it under the prices.

Is this a 21-day challenge?

No. That number was never a real finding. Simple daily habits often take a couple of months to feel automatic, sometimes longer, and the book is built for that.

Is it based on research?

Yes. The notes at the back list the studies behind each chapter, with links. Where no study exists yet, the notes say so.

Will it help with smoking, drinking, or gambling?

The book is written for everyday habits. If what you want to change feels out of your control, or involves alcohol, drugs, gambling, or smoking, it deserves more support than a book can give. A doctor or a support service is a good next step.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. You can ask for a full refund within 14 days of your purchase, at paddle.net or by emailing hello@architectofdays.com. You don’t need to give a reason.

Can I print it?

Yes. The book is set as a 6 × 9 inch book, and the worksheet prints on US Letter or A4.

Every big change begins with a small one.

Let’s find yours.
